Convert JSON to PDF

JSON becomes PDF tables: one row per value, and every nested block gets a table of its own.

Convert JSON to PDF when an export has to be shown to a person: attached to a report, printed, or sent to someone who will not pick their way through curly braces.

What happens when you convert JSON to PDF

A program reads JSON easily, a person trips over the quotes, commas and nesting. On a PDF page the same data is laid out in tables, where each value takes its own row and carries the name of its field.

A nested block does not get mixed into the pile, it gets a table of its own, and the field that held the block becomes the heading. The order shifts along the way: plain values of a level are printed first and nested blocks follow, so a field that stood after a block in the file ends up above it in the document.

  • Braces, quotes and commas from the syntax never reach the page, only field names and values do.
  • The source carries no styling, so the whole document is set the same way, with no headings of varying size.
  • Lists of values print one after another, a row per element.
  • A file with no data in it, an empty object or an empty list, produces a page that says there is no data.

For the opposite task, taking a document apart back into data, see the PDF to JSON converter. A flat list of records is easier to open as a spreadsheet through the JSON to CSV converter.

How to convert

  1. Upload your JSON file to this page.
  2. Check that the target format is PDF.
  3. Start the conversion and wait for the finished file.
  4. Download the PDF and page through it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the nesting preserved?

Yes, though it shows up as separate tables rather than indentation: an inner block is printed as its own table with the field name as the heading.

Why do fields appear in a different order than in the file?

Within each level the plain values come out first and the nested blocks after them. If the order matters, arrange the data so that blocks come last.

Can values be edited in the finished PDF?

No, a PDF is made for reading and printing. Edit the source JSON and convert the file again.
