Convert BMP to PNG
BMP compresses into PNG without losses: the pixels stay identical while diagrams and screenshots shrink.
Convert BMP to PNG when the picture must not be spoiled by compression but the uncompressed file can no longer be carried around: a diagram, a screenshot or a drawing is expected on a site, in a chat or inside a document.
What happens when you convert BMP to PNG
PNG compresses the image without losses: dot for dot it stays the same, and only the way it is written changes. On drawings with large flat areas the gain is enormous, and the file becomes several or even dozens of times lighter.
The pixel size does not change, colours do not shift, and no new artefacts appear. Open the result next to the original at high zoom and you will not find a difference.
- Crisp lines, text on a screenshot and the edges of flat fills stay sharp.
- PNG can hold transparency, but an opaque BMP will not grow any on its own.
- A photo also survives losslessly in PNG, it will simply weigh more than in JPG.
The opposite direction is the PNG to BMP converter. When the smallest possible photo matters more, take the BMP to JPG converter.
How to convert

Frequently asked questions
Will compression spoil the image?
No. PNG compression is lossless: the result restores exactly the pixels the BMP had.
How much smaller will the file get?
It depends on the picture: diagrams and screenshots with flat areas gain the most, a busy photograph rather less.
